What is SPOT? This orange device is on my bike. Every 10 minutes it sends a signal via satellite to a server somewhere. This is called SPOTcasting. The server maps my position by interfacing with Google Maps, provided I keep SPOT switched on and recharge the batteries overnight. There's also a button which, if I press it, relays a 'help' call to 911 and the next thing I'll see are paramedics and helicopters. Several times I've been itching to press the button and see what happens. It's possible that in the tent at night I could mistake SPOT for the iPod and press the help button thinking I'm going to listen to Elvis. If that happens he won't be the only one leaving the building in a hurry.
